Abuja – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it is working toward placing corps members on a public service salary scale to stop frequent agitation for a review of their allowances.

Its Director-General, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi, said this at a media chat on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that already, the scheme was collaborating with the National Salaries and Wages Commission to concretise the proposal.

Olawumi said that the scheme had made series of attempts at the National Assembly to secure an adjustment in the allowances of the corps members, adding that such attempts had been unsuccessful.

He said that the scheme had taken the matter before the wages commission for a solution, adding that the current N19, 800 monthly allowances for corps members was inadequate in view of the economic situation in the country.

The NYSC boss also announced the resuscitation of the Presidential Award to corps members who had excelled in their service to the nation, adding that the 2013 and 2014 editions would hold this year.

“It (award) was instituted in 1974 with the purpose of rewarding corps members that distinguished themselves through selfless service to their host communities.

“The 2012 and 2013 editions of the award will be hosted later in the year along with the 2014 edition and preparations are already in top gear in this regard.’’

On request for corps members’ relocation, Olawumi said that such requests were approved only on marital and health grounds.

“However, with the current security situation in some states of the country, the scheme applies the doctrine of necessity when corps members apply for relocation on security reasons.

“In such instances, the corps members get relocated automatically; but not to a state of their choice.’’

He, however, warned that the scheme had concluded arrangement to punish those corps members who presented fake health report to aid their relocation, addi
ng that the drastic action would be applied to all those caught in the act to serve as a lesson to others.

Meanwhile, Olawumi said that more than 2.7 million graduates had passed through the scheme since its inception in 1975. (NAN)

Failure to research

You should know the company you are interviewing for. You should know what they do and why they do it. This is even easier now in the internet age. A quick google search can tell you all you need to know and you will appear more prepared and more serious.

Being late

In an employer’s words, “If someone shows up late for an interview with no excuse and no effort made to let me know they were running behind I tell them I am no longer interested in interviewing them.”
[Job interview] Come prepared, dress appropriately and be polite.

Dressing wrongly

Let’s face it, when it comes to interviews, you will be judged by what you wear. So, go for conservative outfits and make sure you appear clean and well put-together.

Checking your phone

There is nothing more insulting to an employer than when you keep bringing out your phone and checking during your interview. In fact, your phone should always be switched off  during an interview so it does not interrupt in any way.

Speaking badly about former or current employer

Your reasons for wanting to leave (or leaving) a previous employer could be one that pisses you off to the extremes but it does not give you a reason to badmouth them to current employers. South African cleric, Prophet Rufus Phala has made his church members drink disinfectant, Dettol, in order to get healed.

Phala, a pastor with AK Spiritual Christian Church, Makgodu, Limpopo in the North Eastern area of South Africa, instructed his followers to drink the disinfectant, while also acknowledging that it was dangerous to do so.

“I know Dettol is harmful, but God instructed me to use it. I was the first one to drink it,” the pastor said in a video.

He also claimed he has been getting WhatsApp messages from people who say they have been healed by obeying his command of drinking the disinfectant.

Dettol is the trade name for a line of hygiene products manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser.

MUST READ...federal Government exhumes body of Nysc corps member who died in kano camp

Government has hinted that the body of the youth corps member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, who died recently at the Kano State NYSC Orientation Camp, will be exhumed for autopsy.

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, dropped the hint on Thursday while addressing State House correspondents.
The National Youths Service Corps had, in its investigation’s report, said the girl, a first-class graduate of Transportation Management from Ladoke Akintola University Ogbomosho, died of a kidney infection.

President Muhammadu Buhari had yesterday ordered an independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Ifedolapo who has since been buried.
But the sports minister explained today that the independent investigation ordered by Buhari would require an autopsy to balance the government’s conclusion on the incident.

“The report given by NYSC is normal and it’s natural that after investigation, they must present their own report on what has happened. But in view of the fact that there are many versions on what led to the death of the NYSC member, it would be fair to look at another version of what happened to be sure of what actually transpired.

It doesn’t have to do with (President Buhari) not trusting the process; but gauge the report alongside other opinion; then, we’ll now be able to tell Nigerians that there were the circumstances on how she died.

“Don’t forget that the report of the NYSC has no autopsy and an independent investigation will require an autopsy. And now, the autopsy, alongside the report, will balance and it will fortify the conclusion the government will make,”.

MUST READ:::NYSC Reveals What Truly Killed ‘Corper Oladepo’ Who Tragically Died in the Kano Orientation Camp

The 2016 Batch ‘B’ corps member, late Ifedolapo Oladepo, who died at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Kano, had renal sepsis which occurred as a result of an infection.
Oladepo graduated from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso before the her tragic demise.
This was the report of an investigation conducted to unravel the immediate cause of her death. The investigation revealed she “had kidney infection, probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.”
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung and Director General of the NYSC, Brig-General Suleiman Kazaure, while presenting the report on Tuesday in Abuja, said the government will continue to ensure the safety of youth corps members.
The family of the deceased corps member had accused the government of negligence in handling Oladepo’s health condition leading to her untimely death.
While presenting the report of the committee set up to unravel the immediate and remote causes of their deaths, Kazaure said Ifedolapo Oladepo’s death was as a result of her “refusal to disclose her ailment she had been battling with before resuming to camp.”
He said, “It is clear that the deceased had an ailment which she did not disclose. From the doctors’ report, the corps member died of renal sepsis occasioned by infection.
“Even, to the untrained, kidney infections do not develop and degenerate to the level of mortality in three days (i.e 7th to 29th November, 2016).
“The deceased first appeared at the camp clinic with complaints of headache and fever, which she said she had been experiencing for two days.
“On examination, the doctors on duty noticed rashes on her legs, which she claimed started appearing as a result of her use of a second-hand knickers she bought without first washing it.
“Doctors noticed increase in the rashes on her legs, the deceased still dismissed it as a reaction to usage of a second-hand knicker. By this time, she had been vomiting. Therefore, she was admitted at the camp clinic and treated with Drazamol injection and Piriton to soothe her body pains as she was already on malaria drugs.”
According to him, the deceased was immediately referred to Gwarzo General Hospital for further treatment, where, after examination, “the doctor concluded that the deceased had kidney infection probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.”
He said Oladepo died on her way to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for immediate dialysis.
He said, “The investigation showed that the deceased responded well until about 2:00am on 29th November when her condition worsened, and her body began to show noticeable signs of fluid retention.
“She was thereafter placed on oxygen as the doctors battled to stabilise her for the long journey to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.”
She finally died at about 4:00 am on November 29, 2016.
It would be recalled that apart from Oladepo, two other corps members died recently died during the on-going 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) orientation programme.
They are Chinyerum Nwenenda Elechi, Ifedolapo Oladepo and Monday Asuquo Ukeme, deployed to Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara states respectively.
